My Journey

Chiranjib Chakraborty is an accomplished and versatile vocalist of Indian classical music of his generation.

Chiranjib was most fortunate that, despite his family not being formally trained in music, their personal sacrifice and encouragement gave him the incentive and determination to make his career in the vast world of music. It was due to their love and appreciation of music that they established 'Anjali', a musical institution where a child could undertake training and enhance his or her experience. The late Shri Shyama Prasad Karmakar, Shri Jatan Basu Majumdar, Smt. Lakshmi Nandi and Shri Ajit Bandyopadhyay were the four teachers attached with Anjali, and from whom Chiranjib assimilated his preliminary education in Indian music.

Since 1980 Chiranjib has been receiving vocal talim (lessons) from the veteran musician late Pandit Nidan Bandhu Bandyopadhayay. He has also taken lessons involving the intricacies of the tala & laya (rhythmic) system of Indian music from late Pandit Anil Palit (disciple of Benares Gharana Music Maestro, Pandit Kishen Maharaj) and late Pandit Sudhir Roy of Delhi Gharana. From1993 onwards he remained associated with Sangeet Research Academy (Kolkata, India) as a student under Pandit Arun Bhaduri, another eminent vocalist of Indian classical music.

Chiranjib completed his Masters Degree in Khayal (one of the most popular styles in Indian classical vocal music) at Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata and later became a teacher with Shrutinandan, a well-established musical institution of Kolkata founded by Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty. This also allowed him to take musical guidance from Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty. Currently, he has been engaged in learning Karnatic vocal music from Maestro Padma Vibhushan Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna.

The music circles of India and abroad have particularly appreciated Chiranjib's blending of the styles of Rampur, Gwalior and Patiala/Kasur Gharanas. Also, his tonal quality, exercise process, presentation and ability of control of sur (pitch) and tala (rhythm) have drawn special attention from music lovers. He is very proficient in classical, light classical, and modern Bengali music and songs. He is currently living in London while constantly performing and holding workshops/ classes all over Europe and India. He has also worked with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (London) as a lecturer for the B. Mus. Degree course under the auspices of Trinity College of London.

It should also be mentioned that Chiranjib has recently been honoured as a 'Fellow' in Indian Vocal Music (FTCL) by the prestigious Trinity College of London
